Moment Catchers June sketching challenge

“The living moment is everything.”

— D.H. Lawrence

My friends, I do believe this past weekend’s sketching challenge was our best yet — and not just because the Moment Catchers June challenge was our biggest: We had 76 artists sketching in 19 countries on five continents!

Yet at the same time, my heart also broke on Saturday night, as soon as I learned about the latest terrorist attacks that struck London — a city I loved calling home for nearly two years. I didn’t know how to process this weekend, which was so full of joy and color and connection for me personally as our sketching challenge unfolded, but was suddenly darkened by the news of more hate and fear taking place in the world.

Then I woke up this morning and read two powerful comments on Instagram from Moment Catchers in the U.K. — Angela and Belinda, both of whom live in Yorkshire:

“[This sketching challenge was] particularly poignant for me yesterday. To think we don’t know each other, have no judgments about race, color, religion, etc. Just people connecting with drawn moments from their own precious lives all over the world. Peace, love, and community.” — Angela

“It’s been 50 years since the Summer of Love and when these sad, tragic, destructive events threaten to divide us it’s important to remember that Love will keep us together. Thinking about everyone sketching and painting all around the world and feel we are making the world just a little more connected.” — Belinda

A part of Belinda’s beautiful and timely sketch this weekend.

After the attacks on Saturday night, I hesitated before sharing more updates about Moment Catchers throughout the weekend — in some ways, it felt frivolous in light of those who had just died at the hands of hate. But reading Angela and Belinda’s comments this morning shifted my perspective about Moment Catchers, and about the role that our growing community might serve:

Our community is about so much more than art — as we take the time to share our sketches and learn about each other’s lives, we’re making the world a more loving and connected place to be…one sketch at a time.

This weekend more than ever, it is an honor to be part of this community with you. My thoughts and prayers are with those affected in London, and to all of our Moment Catcher friends in the U.K.

When your technical capabilities are tied more than your artistic desires, you do This en route! 🎨 Airport, train, hotel lobby… . @candacerardon I've missed bunch of moment catcher weekends by now, but I'm literary jumping into this one, sharing some impressions from my road between Africa and Scandinavia. No colors, but I finally managed to leave it like a real sketch! No heavy touches, no makeovers. Meet Frank (aka Francis). The #TYBeanie Lady Bug my nieces from Texas picked out for me today. 🐞❤️ The tag says Trixy, but if you've seen A Bug's Life, you know why I call him Frank. I started the sketch over twice… The first sketch I experimented with an extra soft Cretacolor Nero and didn't like how easily it smudged. They're not as "water resistant" and I was hoping. Then I tried a pen, but it didn't feel right. Third times the charm… I got a little heavy handed with the black #watercolorpencil, though. The pages with sketches 1 & 2 will get smaller sketches added, or tool tests/experiments! 👇🏻 👇🏻 👇🏻 #WWendiWonkySketches, #noerasing #freehandsketch, #sketch #30minutesketch #art4all #everydaymatters #illustratedlife #creativitykillsoldness #insidemysketchbook #everydaysketch #sketchingfromlife #momentcatchers #watercolorpencilsketch #sketchjournal #illustratedjournal #visualjournal #sketching #uniball Vision Elite [email protected]_USA #waterbrush @fabercastellglobal: Albrecht Durer #watercolorpencils @stillmanandbirn #sketchbook #stillmanandbirn Softcover Alpha

Today's #momentcatchers session was all about the café vibes in Montevideo! 🙌🏼 — I loved discovering a new café just down the street from my apartment, getting to chat with the owner Sandra and hear her fascinating life story (she's originally from Peru, is married to an Italian man, has lived all across Central and South America and even Mozambique, and is now settled in Uruguay 😲), and managing to hold off from feasting on my raspberry tart juuust long enough to draw it 🍰✍🏼 — Once again, today has reminded me why I love Moment Catchers weekend–it's much-needed motivation for me to get out of my comfort zone, explore new places in town, and create a sketch I might not normally have made the time for otherwise. Hope you're all enjoying the weekend, too! 😊🎨✨

  • Amanda Thompson

Your words are strong and true Candace. I think ‘frivolous’ (I do not really believe we are frivolous mind you) things that bring joy and happiness to ourselves and so many are what must happen ESPECIALLY when awful things occur. I recently heard at a funeral that whilst the flame of life burns we must live it which ties in well with your chosen quote at the top of this page. We all lived through the coverage of London and I am sure our community felt the pain deeply and took the time to consider the police, those innocents involved and their families but we didn’t sit in sadness. We dealt with it in a way that brought light back that shared light with others. I don’t know if that made sense and I hope I haven’t offended any with my words.
I love your round ups Candace as a few pictures always seem to slip past me and I am always keen to see them all and appreciate their beauty and variety. Have a great week.

    • Hello, Amanda! It’s so fun to think of you currently exploring New Zealand as I write this here in Montevideo 🙂 I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to get back to your wonderful comment, but I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to share your own thoughts and reactions after this month’s attack in London–what you wrote here was especially moving: “We dealt with it in a way that brought light back that shared light with others.” I’m so grateful you bring such light to the Moment Catchers community every month, and hope you continue to share life in Australia with all of us elsewhere! <3

  • Brenda K

This is amazing!! I feel like this blog post is like the garden display of art on the art tour I sketched: a delightful oasis of beauty that I want to share but also savour privately! Thanks for this amazing round-up…been through about half so far. What a treat!! 😊

    • Thank you so much for your great comment here, Brenda–I’m so thrilled you could take part in our June sketching challenge this month! And I especially love how you described this roundup: “a delightful oasis of beauty that I want to share but also savour privately!” I couldn’t agree more, and I’m already looking forward to what moments of beauty you capture next month 🙂 <3

  • Belinda Noda

Candace thank you for writing and sharing about the shocking event in the capitol. My daughter was out in central London that night and that proximity always makes us feel it more deeply. Sadly, the whole world over, shocking events occur on a daily basis. I was reminded by the sketch by Angels daughter that drawing and painting is a natural spontaneous part of childhood that we (speaking for myself) tend to loose. So through reconnecting to childhood joys of drawing and painting we rekindle our sense of childhood play and all the lack of prejudices and judgement adulthood can burden us with.
Thank you for bringing these all these precious “moments” to our attention.

    • Thank you so much for sharing such an honest and moving message here, Belinda–I can only imagine how unnerving it must have been for you, knowing your daughter was out in London on the night of the attacks. But I really appreciated the words and insights you shared, which reminded me of a quote from Picasso: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” I’ve always loved that quote and the challenge to return to our childhood love of art as adults, but you made me realize that such a return can have even deeper effects in our lives–that with a return to art, so too can we reconnect with the openness we often lived with as children. That’s such a powerful thought, and inspires me to keep working on Moment Catchers even more. Thank you again for being part of our community, and I so look forward to seeing what you create next month! <3

  • Treava

Candace I had tears in my eyes reading your words. Such sadness and darkness in the world. Your quote above is so relevant. Fortunately we have this amazing global community that you created where we share wonderful, colourful moments from so many talented people. It is such a warm and fuzzy feeling to belong to this! And it is growing which in itself is such a positive aspect.
I always look so forward to perusing the submitted sketches (somehow I miss some of them in Instagram).
I just love all the sketches – precious snippets of daily life and special moments. I have learned that you can make any Moment special if choose to.
Candace, thank you again for creating Moment Catchers, compiling all the sketches into a post and providing us with continuous inspiration and heartfelt goodness.

    • “I have learned that you can make any moment special if choose to.” Yes, yes, yes! I adore this thought, Treava, and it brings me so much joy to hear that being a part of the Moment Catchers community has led you to learn that. It’s such an honor for me to share your sketches and moments in the roundups each month, and I loved hearing that you enjoyed this month’s collection of moments. Sending a big hug of gratitude your way from Montevideo today! <3

  • Here it is, Friday evening, raining outside and it is cold. We are officially in winter and I have a rosé beside me with the heater on and thoroughly happy in front of the computer with my Moment Catchers friends and their gorgeous artwork!!
Beautiful words from you Candace. Yes, have to agree with Treava, Belinda, Amanda and Co. It is utterly appalling to see these horrid images in such a gorgeous country, or anywhere in the world. It just breaks my heart to see this happening, I am a Kiwi living in Sydney but my heritage is English and I lived there for 7 years until 1991,my soul is still in that country. The English are such a stoic nation of people so this will not get them down but it is still shocking. I do astronomy as a hobby and there is a stunning and immensely magnified shot from the Cassini spacecraft as it passed between the rings of Saturn and the planet looking back towards Earth with our sun. We are minuscule and so insignificant in this universe but we are also very rare! I wish the whole world could understand the significance of this.
This is such joy to look forward to your blog with all of these amazing sketches and words of wisdom every month Candace, it is so comforting to look at and read the comments. I am learning about places I have never heard of, clicking on the location to find more photos, so incredibly interesting. Like Amanda, I don’t always see every sketch on Instagram so it is great to see them all collated via your hard work here Candace. Thank you, thank you. Vxxx

    • Dear Victoria–I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to share your thoughts and wisdom here (and it was lovely to picture you cozied up in front of the heater with a glass of rosé–I’m glad you’re staying warm this winter so far! 🙂 But I was truly grateful to read your comment, and I especially enjoyed learning about your own heritage and experiences of living in England. I also loved what you shared about how you’re learning about places you’ve never heard of through the Moment Catchers challenges–more and more, this is starting to feel like a very special aspect of our community, and how each challenge is essentially a virtual trip around the world in a single weekend. Not only is this a fun chance to virtually see more of the world, but I’m also realizing how very important this is in helping create more empathy and understanding in the world. Never could I have expected back in January that Moment Catchers would be growing like this, but I’m incredibly grateful for it–and grateful for the joy and support you share each month! I’m already looking forward to seeing what you create in July, Victoria 🙂 xx

  • Thank you so much for sharing Angela and Belinda’s wise words as you reflected on this month’s Moment Catchers weekend, Candace. It’s always great to be reminded of what can connect human beings regardless of language or country—like sketches, music, smiles, and laughs.

Thank you for hosting this challenge, compiling all of the sketches, and sharing your heartfelt thoughts with the community. xxx

    • “It’s always great to be reminded of what can connect human beings regardless of language or country—like sketches, music, smiles, and laughs.” I love this thought, Rebecca! Thank you for putting that so beautifully. I’m so happy and grateful to have you be such a big part of the Moment Catchers community, and can’t wait to keep following your creative journey this year! <3
