Friends, I am forever amazed at the power of setting intentions.
As I loved sharing with you in September, one of the key intentions I set at the beginning of this year was to organize my first extended sketching workshop, which I thought I might like to host in Guatemala. But not a couple of months later, a wonderful woman named Sharon reached out to me, inviting me to organize a watercolor sketching workshop through her company, Arts & Cultural Travel. I couldn’t quite believe the serendipity of her timing and message.
Sharon’s invitation led us to dream and scheme up a week-long sketching tour through the beautiful cities and villages of Portugal, which I can’t wait to lead next September (and just in case you’re interested in it, there are still places available!).
But Sharon’s email wasn’t the only serendipitous invitation 2017 has held. Only a month after announcing the Portugal workshop, another unexpected message arrived in my inbox — from a retired high school principal in New York City named Gail. She told me she was organizing an art and yoga retreat for 2018, and she wanted to know if I was interested in leading the art workshops, specifically focusing on sketching. Again, I could only smile and marvel at the uncanny kismet of it all.
The dates and location Gail initially had in mind worked perfectly. After a few more weeks of planning, we’re thrilled to launch the retreat this week — and I have a feeling you’ll love the name we decided on for it 🙂
August 16-19, 2018 (Thursday-Sunday)
Spirit Fire Retreat Center in Leyden, Massachusetts (about a 3.5-hour drive from New York City). The center sounds and looks truly beautiful, and I especially love the idea of being based in a single, peaceful place for the entire time we’re together. Best of all, they’ll prepare all meals for us while we’re there, using lots of seasonal, organic produce — often straight from their own garden!

Official retreat description:
In an age when life’s everyday moments are far too fleeting, this 4-day/3-night art and yoga retreat is an invitation to slow down, breathe deeply, and be more present in your life — through the power of creativity, movement, and nature.
Set amongst the tranquil woods, streams, and meadows of the Spirit Fire Retreat Center, each day will begin and end with carefully sequenced yoga sessions in a peaceful, sunlit studio, led by New York City-based yoga instructor Marci Rubin — bringing you back to the present in your body, mind, and soul.
I will also be leading twice-daily sketching workshops in the dedicated art barn, as watercolor sketching is another incredible medium for observing the world around us — and within us — more mindfully. In between, there will be plenty of time for savoring organic, home-cooked meals; hiking secluded trails across the 95-acre property; and bonding by the campfire at night.
In the end, my hope is that you’ll not only return home refreshed and rejuvenated — you will also develop powerful ways of catching more extraordinary moments from your life.
