Moment Sketchers, it’s that time again — our 2018 monthly sketching challenge is about to begin!
When I announced the Moment Sketchers Project exactly one year ago this week, I wasn’t sure at all if the idea would resonate with people. And I was even more unsure on the morning of our first challenge last January; while I hoped for the best, I also fully prepared myself for there to be no more than two sketches submitted during the challenge, from just myself and José.
So when 24 artists took part in 10 countries around the world, you might say I was just a little blown away. But my surprise only continued to grow as the year went on — because our community continued to expand as well: from 44 artists in April, to 73 in September, to a final count of 97 artists for our December sketching challenge, in 24 countries! Working on the final version of our community map for 2017 was an incredible experience, to see just how much my initial humble expectations were exceeded:

The global heart and soul of Moment Sketchers
This worldwide aspect of Moment Sketchers was one of my favorite parts of our community that developed last year — but it wasn’t the only one! For me, three key themes and values emerged that now sum up the heart and soul of our global tribe:
1. Slowing down
We love being present and slowing down long enough to catch those small but sacred memories from our lives. Life may be moving faster than ever, but our sketchbooks are extraordinary tools for recording and remembering life’s little moments.
2. Sharing our world
We also love the diversity of our community. Sketching is not only a great way to share our own unique corner of the world — it’s a powerful way of learning about other ways of life far different from our own.
3. Supporting one another
Finally — and perhaps most importantly — Moment Sketchers is a wonderfully supportive community. Whether you’ve been sketching for years or are just picking up a paintbrush for the first time, we believe in helping and encouraging each other on our individual creative journeys, sharing tips and tricks, and celebrating our milestones and victories.
If these themes and values resonate with you, I hope you’ll consider joining our community in 2018!

How to take part in our 2018 challenges
And now, without further ado, I couldn’t be more thrilled to launch our second annual Moment Sketchers project! I always want to make sure the challenges are simple to join and easy to share with others, so the ‘rules’ for taking part are still the same:
Anytime on the first full weekend of each month, beginning this Saturday, the 6th of January.
Anywhere you like, especially if it’s in your hometown. One of the greatest gifts that travel sketching has taught me is how to be more present and alive in my life — even when I’m not traveling. I hope you’ll take part in the challenge each month, whether you’re at home or on the road.
Note about themes: While there’s no official theme each month, and I hope you’ll always feel free to sketch whatever inspires you, one of the most enjoyable aspects of our Moment Sketchers community is how each challenge is also a chance to share your own corner of the world with everyone. Is there a favorite seasonal tradition you celebrate in your culture? Does a particular challenge happen to fall on a national holiday in your country? If so, share it with us through your sketch!
Now for the fun part — be sure to share your sketch online afterwards (especially on Instagram and Facebook), and tag your photos with the hashtag #momentsketchers (alternatively, you can also submit them via email to [email protected], though sketches posted to Instagram are best).
I’ll then collect the sketches and post a round-up of them all here on the blog, every Monday after our monthly sketching session.
I so look forward to our first sketching challenge of 2018 kicking off this Saturday — and even more, I can’t wait to see what moments, stories, and sketches await our community this year!
