Sketching Chile: In praise of going somewhere new

I love the experience of sketching a single place from as many angles and perspectives as possible — because the more we sketch a new destination, the deeper our connection with that place seems to grow.

40 Days of Moments: 8 things I learned from sketching every day

Throughout the 40 Days of Moments project, I kept my eyes peeled for magic — because that’s one of the greatest lessons this project taught me: When we are on the lookout for moments, the universe provides them.

Art Journaling 101: Official eBook launch!

While I love my sketchbook as a tool for observing the outer world, I equally love my art journal for the way it helps me pay greater attention to the world within. I hope you enjoy my newest eBook, Art Journaling 101!

Earth Day 2017: An illustrated celebration of our greater world

As I researched photos for the African savannah, Amazon rainforest, and the Great Barrier Reef, I loved the feeling of mentally circling the globe — and so, too, could I feel my own perspective being realigned.

Sketching the Northern Lights: In praise of being astonished

It was only by thinking about the birds that I could pin down what it is I love so much about the Northern Lights — that the lights are as animate and awe-inspiring as any creature in the universe; they’re alive.

The day the universe gave me a paintbrush

For me, there’s always been a fine line between the questions of who I am and what I do; shifting my professional focus from travel writer to sketch artist has thus been a deeply personal journey for me, too.

I fell in love with @onbeing years ago, back when I was traveling full-time, and I can still vividly remember where I was walking in the world as I listened to particular episodes.

These days, my journeys take place a little closer to home – often in the form of stroller walks around Montevideo, as Elena and I start exploring the world together.

But On Being is still a constant companion. Not only does it help me live the questions – as Rilke would say – but often, it helps me understand what questions I should even be asking in life.

Thank you, @onbeing, for always bringing wisdom and insights to my walks, and I can’t wait to begin passing them on now to my favorite little explorer 🤍

Their new exhibition, “The Portable Universe / El Universo en tus Manos,” explores indigenous Colombian art, and to tell the story of how the exhibit came together, they also created a documentary that my maps and artwork were commissioned for. Thanks so much to @lacma and @agnes.stauber for the chance to be part of this special series! 🇨🇴✨
