Welcome to the Moment Catchers Project, a global sketching challenge
We are a community passionate about slowing down, sketching from life, and seeing the world around us more deeply. As though it were a dreamcatcher, our sketchbooks help us catch more of life’s little moments, whether we’re at home or on the road. We’re glad you’re here.

My name is Candace, and it’s an honor for me to welcome you to the Moment Catchers Project. Although I’m a professional sketch artist and illustrator by trade, last year I didn’t get my sketchbook out nearly as often as I wanted to.
At the start of 2017, I was determined to change that and begin sketching on-location more regularly throughout the year. But here’s the thing:
I didn’t want to do it alone.
And so the idea for a community-wide sketching challenge for 2017 was born…

Our monthly sketching challenge
In 2017, we’re coming together once a month to put our passion for sketching into practice. We sketch on our own wherever we happen to be in the world, and then connect through social media to share our sketches with one another.
Anytime on the first weekend of each month.
Anywhere you like, especially if it’s in your hometown. One of the greatest gifts of travel sketching is that it helps us be more present and alive in our lives — even (and especially) when we’re not traveling.
Now this is the fun part — be sure to share your sketch on Instagram afterwards, and tag your photos with the community hashtag #momentcatchers (and feel free to tag me as well, @candacerardon, so I’m sure to see your sketches). I’ll then collect the sketches and post a roundup of them all here on the blog, every Monday morning after our monthly sketching session.
Here’s a look at just a few of the beautiful sketches from this year’s Moment Catchers challenges:

Who — and where — we are
What’s special about our Moment Catchers community is that we are truly global.
So far, we’ve had 106 sketch artists take part in this year’s challenges, in more than 30 countries on 5 continents. Thanks to the power of the internet and social media, we’re able to connect every month, see different corners of the world through each other’s eyes, and find encouragement from one another. One artist in our community — Jean from the Philippines — said it best:
“I wasn’t able to do outdoor sketching as often as I wanted to last year, partly because I was a bit apprehensive to get my art materials out and sketch alone in public. Joining the challenge felt great because somehow I didn’t feel alone even when my ‘sketching buddies’ were miles away and time zones apart.”
I’m still in awe that our community spans from a sailboat in New Zealand to the slopes of Mont Olympia in Quebec:
