“The snow itself is lonely or, if you prefer, self-sufficient. There is no other time when the whole world seems composed of one thing and one thing only.”

— Joseph Wood Krutch

It finally hit — London’s first snow.

They’d been calling for it all week — on Tuesday, a woman behind the counter at a Hampton Wick cafe quite confidently claimed we’d have snow that night. Wednesday morning proved her wrong.

When another woman on the bus yesterday said it would start snowing at six p.m., I didn’t really believe her. But when the clock struck six, I had a cheeky peek out the window — and wouldn’t you know it: It was snowing.

It was the perfect kind of night for a snowfall: me with nowhere to go, a warm flat to cozy up in, and a friend’s manuscript to read through — all while watching the world turn white. But rather than snap the kind of pictures I did last year of London’s first snow, I waited until this morning, when the few inches that had stuck began to melt, leaving behind jewel-like dewdrops clinging impossibly to petals and leaves.

It was a winter wonderland alright.

  • Great shots, I love the focus! My first 2 winters in Canada where it started snowing I ran outside in my pj’s & took a very excited (and cold) looking photo of myself with the snow falling the in background 🙂

    • Hey Erin! It’s awesome to hear from you–how’ve you been? Are you still in Canada? Congrats on your photography going so well! Thanks for the kind photo words, I love playing around with focus and getting as close to the subject as possible…I just got a new set of macro lenses I’m dying to try out too 🙂

  • Sheer beauty. One of my “52 Changes for 52 Weeks” is to gaze at something beautiful every day. Thank you for this big cup of chicken soup for my soul. So so so lovely. I can’t believe you caught those droplets. WOW.

    • Thanks 🙂 I actually thought about you as I was passing by the first plants with the droplets on them. I happened to have my camera with me, and I said, if Mom were here, she’d stop and get her shot of beauty for the day. So I took a few minutes and walked way slower around the building, keeping my eyes open for more caught dewdrops. Definitely worth getting to the library a little later!

  • it looks glorious! i saw it when we flew in to Gatwick last night. not a nice welcome home! but the snow seemed only to linger in the counties- London seems relatively snow free at this point. And it WAS the first snow of the year.

    • Perfect! Glad I wasn’t wrong about the snow then 🙂 And I know, I’ve got a few friends who live a couple hours north and they said that not only is it -10 degrees, but they’ve still got snow. I’m no longer complaining about the weather! I bet that was a beautiful view from the plane window…glad you made it back safe.
