Get out of [London]town: Five favorite spots in England…outside the capital.

Over the past year, I’ve been trying to slowly add to my list of UK destinations outside London. To travel around the country enough so that my perception of England isn’t just, well, England = London.

Watching the world turn white.

Watching the world turn white.

It was the perfect kind of night for a snowfall: me with nowhere to go, a warm flat to cozy up in, and a friend’s manuscript to read through–all while watching the world turn white.

In pictures: Village life on a Polynesian atoll.

As much as I loved life on a black pearl farm in French Polynesia, it was our weekly trips to Ahe’s village that I looked forward to the most–for the movement they offered to our routine and for the chance to be a part of the community.

Four signs you’re at lunch with travel bloggers.

No matter how grey the sky, no matter how packed the trains, sometimes London does something right. Even as the temperatures plummeted, this past weekend reminded me of why I fell in love with this city in the first place: London brings people together.

Macanese memories: In celebration of Chinese New Year.

Macanese memories: In celebration of Chinese New Year.

Three days in Macau were my first on Chinese soil, and I can still remember the island’s glowing red lanterns, yellow coils of incense, sweet-smelling almond cakes, and the twisting tiled streets that led up to the ruins of St. Paul’s.

Introducing WildJunket: On travel, magazines, and childhood dreams.

I’m thrilled to announce that not only has Nellie Haung officially launched the first issue of WildJunket Magazine today, but that yours truly is contributing editor. Nothing like a childhood dream come true, ay?

My happy place: At the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.

Last time we’d checked, we were in Washington D.C., but with such a structure before us, its limestone exterior gleaming against the bold blue sky, we couldn’t help thinking we’d somehow found our way to Paris.

New year, new blog: Introducing the Great Affair.

As this blog switches names, what is really changing is the lens through which each post is read–that it’s not only about where you travel or how you get there, but the spirit behind it. That insatiable desire for new places and different air.

Fireworks frenzy: A very happy New Year’s Eve!

It’s that time again: when, whether or not you have plans for the night, you can’t help but be infected by the excitement in the air. The buzz of one year coming to an end and another about to begin, the intoxicating thrill of fireworks and champagne.

Where the year took me: My top 11 places of 2011.

The past week or so has brought a surge of year-in-review posts from fellow travel bloggers. No matter how much these posts may resemble each other, they all matter simply because we’re telling our stories.

I fell in love with @onbeing years ago, back when I was traveling full-time, and I can still vividly remember where I was walking in the world as I listened to particular episodes.

These days, my journeys take place a little closer to home – often in the form of stroller walks around Montevideo, as Elena and I start exploring the world together.

But On Being is still a constant companion. Not only does it help me live the questions – as Rilke would say – but often, it helps me understand what questions I should even be asking in life.

Thank you, @onbeing, for always bringing wisdom and insights to my walks, and I can’t wait to begin passing them on now to my favorite little explorer 🤍

Their new exhibition, “The Portable Universe / El Universo en tus Manos,” explores indigenous Colombian art, and to tell the story of how the exhibit came together, they also created a documentary that my maps and artwork were commissioned for. Thanks so much to @lacma and @agnes.stauber for the chance to be part of this special series! 🇨🇴✨
